Whats in my fountain?
I cleaned everything out about 3 weeks ago, re-filled with water and added mosquito cakes.About a week ago I noticed hundreds of grain of sand sized things in the water. They were medium brown color, and moved surprisingly fast when my finger came near them. Today they are all gone, and now I have a few (5 – 10) insects darting around. These new ones are about the size of a honey bee, and are hard to see, being sort of a muddy tan color, and nearly transparent. They have 6 legs, and the overall shape suggests that they have wings. They are quite thin, and seem to fly or dart under water. I’ve watched them for some time, and they don’t seem to come too near the surface. Any ideas?
It sounds like a water boatman. I’ve gotten them out of the water with a leaf skimmer and they hop and jump about all over the place.
